Therapy programmes are aimed at reducing the risk of offending/challenging behaviour and promoting pro-social behaviours, responsibility and relapse prevention.

We incorporate pharmacological and cognitive behavioural approaches, alongside structured timetables that include social, educational and occupational therapies.  Our aim is for patients to build skills in self maintenance, productivity and leisure and to ultimately move on to the least restrictive environments possible.

Our learning disability services for men are based at our centrally located Northampton site, set in 120 acres of landscaped parklands, with a regional site available in Nottinghamshire with 14 medium secure beds.  Across all of our services, patients are offered:

  • secure outdoor gardens, offering excellent therapeutic environments
  • therapy rooms and kitchens, to promote skills for everyday living
  • a games rooms to enhance social interaction
  • specialist educational facilities to develop patients’ literacy and academic skills
  • visitor spaces, enabling safe areas for family visits.

We have a full-time, onsite multidisciplinary team (MDT), including psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists (OT), speech and language therapists (SALT), social workers and nurses.

We can manage a range of index offences, including:

  • Adapted Sex Offender Treament Programme (ASOTP), to meet the needs of patients with learning disability
  • firesetting
  • substance misuse treatment programmes.

A therapeutic culture

Underpinned by the principles of Positive Behavioural Support (PBS), we combine pharmacological and cognitive behavioural approaches.  We involve patients in their own care and risk plans using the My Shared Pathway approach.

The therapeutic programme includes:

  • psychology, including dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), sensory integration and total communication approaches
  • occupational therapy
  • speech and language therapy (SALT)
  • social workers who support family contact and transition to community facilities
  • education (TEACHH)
  • vocational opportunities at our activity centre and at Workbridge.

Each patient is offered over 25 hours of therapeutic activity each week.

Experts in managing risk

We use multiple measures to monitor progress and allow us to adapt management plans quickly. We use the following scales to measure clinical risk:

  • Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool (MOHOST)
  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)
  • Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS)

Discharge plans

Discharge is considered at admission and our clinical and social work teams will work with local area teams to manage transition into the least restrictive environments possible.

St Andrew’s offers highly bespoke community care packages to support very complex patients.  This would be discussed and agreed with the commissioner in advance.
